If you thought that there was nothing much to do in Canberra, you are wrong. I somehow got quite busy socially this week, despite not having friends here. I have decided that I have officially met enough people to not be overwhelmed with fun things to do!
Wednesday night, after driving around and around and feeling like I was in Melbourne for a while, I joined a meet up at Smith's alternative to listen to a jazz band. I was so difficult not to get up and dance my own dance but I managed to contain it to my chair. I noticed that the lovely Jennifer, who welcomed me with a huge smile and offered me a seat, as I stood in the doorway and scanned the room for what might be the meetup group, was doing the same. She is running a jazz jam there on Sunday 19th and invited me along. She also invited me to join her on her September trip to Spain, Portugal and Morocco, which I would dearly love to do, but don't think that I will be able to take time off before my trip to Antarctica in Feb 2024. I will go on the 19th in the afternoon after MCing at the Multicultural Festival, which I volunteered for. Thanks Eva, for giving me the experience at your wedding 😜
I admit, I didn't really like the first item.
I warmed up to them though.
Despite it being difficult to find, (for me using GPS) it was a really funky venue and a fun night.
Thursday night I walked for about a minute to get to Comedy at the Durham and met Aycha. The pub crowd was noisy and the comedians, not particularly funny but again, it was a fun night. For some reason Aycha asked me if I would do it. If you didn't already know, doing stand up comedy, just once, is on my bucket list. So, my plan is to have a go at it before I leave Canberra. I can talk about all of you and no-one will know! One thing I won't do, which I felt that too many of the female comedians did, was to mention the vag.😏
I took a couple of token videos, so the quality could be seen.
Friday night, I joined Eleanor for Vinyl night. That was pretty good too. Actually, interesting and again, I wanted to dance. It probably went for a bit longer than my attention span. People take their vinyl to the National Film and Sound Archive and choose a track, according to the theme of the night. They talk about the track and why they chose it and then it gets played. The sound quality is super good and most of the attendees are in the relevant age group, so I was able to sing along. There was a good variety of music and a variety of reasons that it was chosen.
Saturday I met Sally for another brunch at Westfield Woden. They have shops similar to Doncaster. I needed to find my way from there to the osteopath, that I am going to visit on Thursday. I looked around Westfield, then decided to check out the Canberra Outlet. I didn't plan on buying anything, and I didn't, but I had a good look at suitcases. There was a really light and pretty, with good pockets, one that I liked but I couldn't find any reviews on Tosca luggage and when I investigated, I could get it for the same price anywhere, so I didn't buy it. From there, I checked out the Fyshwick Fresh Food Market and was forced to eat Mango, so that I could get past one on the grocers and back to my car. It was good mango!
This Thursday, I'm going to see Ahn Do at the Canberra Theatre and Friday, will join another meet up for drinks at old Parliament house.
I would also like to mention that everyone in Melbourne seemed to delight in telling me how cold Canberra would be. It seems, that summer here has been better than there, which I'm sure will make up for the cold later.
Stay well :)
Sounds like you're finding plenty of interesting things to do & places to go & meeting people along the way. I planned to do that when I moved to CS but after an initial burst of energy & curiosity, I find I've become a bit lazy. However, I like my new life in the slow lane! Carolyn
