15. Catch up
In no particular order, here is a bit of a catch up on what's been happening in Canberra.
The multicultural Festival was quite good in the city area. There was supposedly a festival shuttle bus starting on the Friday night of the Festival, which would leave every 20 minutes from Kingston. Sally and I waited at the bus stop for 40 minutes, had some pleasant chats with others at the bus stop but did not see the Festival bus. I ended up driving in.
I was shocked to see all these rabbits in front of and behind me in the city. There was a small patch of green in this space but everywhere else, were holes in the dirt.
It was a hot night! Lots of food vans and lots of stages. There were really long queues for food but the entertainment on the stages was quite good.
In the morning, I met Pete at my favourite coffee cafe in Kingston for breakfast. I was happy to see him and that he got to see where I was staying.
On the Saturday, Kevin was in Canberra for a couple of hours, so I caught up with him and took him to the Jetty. I was very disappointed that he didn't want to do any sightseeing.
It was nice to see people from home.
Have I mentioned that there are ducks everywhere?!!! I'm not sure how I'm going to appreciate the few ducks in Surrey Dive again. I know in this picture there are just a few but they seem to be everywhere around the lake including Duntroon. The swans and the long boats (is it a dragon boat or what?) are confined to the Lake.
On Tuesday nights I have been going to beginner improvisation classes. I like it. I think the teacher talks too much and isn't as funny as he thinks he is but I like the games and the people and the improvisation tips. I think I would have done better with my chant when I volunteered at the laneway theatre magic show if I'd done the impvov class before hand. I'm looking forward to next week because it's "Special week". I don't know what that means yet, but I will be sure to let you know.
A couple of Thursday nights ago, I joined a meet up group (I really liked that group) for a ghost tour of Kingston foreshore. Funnily, the lady guiding the tour was doing open mike comedy at the Durham hotel when I went there. Now I know how to get in to perform my comedy act. I'll try to prepare something for April. I think it's great that I can knock one attempt at stand up comedy off my bucket list in Canberra because it means I can talk about you all and you will never know 😆
During the Ghost tour I learned that there was a flood in Queanbeyan which carried bodies from the Cemetary to Lake Burley Griffiths. Did corpses really get washed from Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery into Lake Burley Griffin in the 1974 flood? - ABC News
This mural is opposite the train station. It's a strange part of Kingston. Although it's not far away from the main hub, it feels like it's in the middle of nowhere. The hall was built by the community and I took a photo because a) I liked it and b) to remind me that there is theatre performed there. I really should go. Apparently, there is a cold spot... is it a ghost?
Apparently when the city was designed, the lake was supposed to be cleaned out every few years but it isn't. It is very similar to the colour of the yarra. BEHIND THE LANDSCAPE OF LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN: (canberra.edu.au)
Look what I finally found!
This Salvos is really quite close and is huge! If you want to make a donation, drive around the back and drop your stuff off in the appropriate bins in the shed. Simples! I dropped off two bags of things and only bought a microwave popcorn maker. I can't wait to try it.
Last Sunday I went to visit the High Court because the web site said it would be open but it wasn't! So, I finally took myself to the information centre and got myself a map, discovered things to do and places to go. I also walked a bit for the first time along the opposite side of the lake.
I should try some of these tracks.
People ride these scooters everywhere!
This is the information centre. I think there is a restaurant attached to the right.
